Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres in a suicide bombing attack at a rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu today back in 1991. Hence, this day is observed in order to commemorate his death anniversary. He was appointed as India’s sixth Prime Minister and served the nation from 1984 to 1989.
